Day 180 -- Fathers

Today is Father's Day, so naturally I am thankful for all of the fathers in my life and for the profound influence they have had on me.

  • My heavenly Father, who loves me for exactly who I am, unconditionally. How does he do that?
  • My earthly Father, who drove me to gymnastics practice in Lansing 5 days a week, taught me to love music and how to whistle, and always knew how to make me laugh.
  • My step-father, who can grill like no one else, can make some amazing homemade meatballs, and, most importantly, is one of the most supportive, loving, and kind men I have ever met.
  • My father-in-law, who is generous, honest, and helpful, and who helped to teach my husband how to be a good dad.
  • My grandpa Stuart, who taught me to love garage sales, gave me my first memories of learning how to read, and instilled in me a love for all things vintage and for the environment (he had solar panels on his house in Jackson in the 80s...so cool).
  • My Uncle Stan, who I feel is the ultimate poster child for the fruits of the spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and self-control.  He is like another grandfather to my kids.
  • My grandpa Evans, who taught me some great jokes, how to be a great bargain shopper, and gave me a love for the outdoors, an appreciation for newspaper comics, and my passion for good food.
  • And my husband, who I knew would be a good dad, but continues to amaze me daily by his devotion to his three kids.  Every move, every decision he makes is for our family's benefit.  Like any corny Fathers' Day card would say, I couldn't imagine doing this whole parenting thing without him.

I made this little video for Colby for Fathers' Day, and I think it does a fair job of summarizing our appreciation for him, although nothing could really represent the respect and admiration I have for him as a father.

Lord, thank you for the role fathers have played and still continue to play in my life.  Thank you for a day to honor them.  Thank you for how amazingly blessed I am by these men in my life.  In your name I pray, Amen.
