Day 245 -- 106 Names

When Mrs. Shore and I decided to take on the role of Student Council Advisors for this school year at Western High School, we knew that we had a huge responsibility.  Our collective vision is to see Student Council foster a positive culture in the school, to engage in activities that bring about an increase in school spirit, and to empower students to use their talents and ideas to make our school a better place.

We decided that our first mission as advisors should be to recruit a core group of students who would be willing to forge ahead with us -- students who would be committed to carrying out this vision and who would draw others in through their enthusiasm; the Domino Effect, if you will.

We decided to set up a table at this year's Student Registration, although neither of us were really too sure about what the effectiveness of this strategy would be.  Over the course of two days (yesterday and today) every student (theoretical) was to come into the school to get their locker assignments, buy a yearbook, fill out important paperwork, etc.  Together, Mrs. Shore and I sat at a table decorated with a pirate theme (which we decided to go with for this year's homecoming) and talked to students about Student Council, encouraging them to join, sharing our vision, answering questions, and addressing student concerns.  If a student showed true interest, we had them sign up so that we could contact them once the school year began.

At the end of today's final session, we had 106 names.

I am so thankful for and overwhelmed by this response from our students.  I feel that it shows their willingness to be a part of something big and something good.  I am excited to be a part of it and to see what sorts of things they come up with!

I can't believe that we snagged 106 names for Student Council!  Thank God!

Lord, thank you for being with Mrs. Shore and I over the past couple of days.  Thank you for these students who are ready and willing to work to make a positive difference in their school.  Please give us wisdom to guide them and the enthusiasm to spur them on.  Help us to collectively to great things for your glory.  In your name I pray, Amen.
