Day 606 -- Dean Aquatic Center

Living in a college town is pretty cool.  It brings a cyclical feel to our community.  For example, fall move-ins have now begun, bringing life and traffic back to town.  Campus gets quiet and concentrated in mid-December, as students quietly shuffle through the falling snow around final exam time.  And when the fraternity houses start playing beach volleyball in April, you know summer is just around the corner.

Another reason I love living near Albion College is their amazing facilities that they so willingly share with the community.  The Whitehouse Nature Center, which we visited a few days ago, is one of those.  Another is the Dow Athletic Center, which allows people in the community to become members for an annual fee.  We are proud members of the Dow, and much to our children's delight, this includes access to the pool in the Dean Aquatic Center.

I have used the pool for a couple of years now for swim training for my triathlons, in the winter months but this is the first season that we've been able to take the kids.  They love this pool, especially the double springboards that they throw themselves off of over and over again without tiring.

Tonight Breslin is spending the night with Grandma Sharp (I feel like I never see this kid anymore!), so Colby and I were able to be one-on-one with the girls at the pool.  They swam like crazy!  Dharia is at the point where she really is swimming all by herself, no noodle, no bubble and AJ isn't too far behind, honestly.  But the best part of watching them swim is without a doubt seeing the pure joy on their faces as they jump off of the diving boards with a terrific splash into the water.

After the girls got out of the pool, I stayed to do a swim workout, and I walked home in the fading sun.  I thought about how lucky I felt to have a nice, clean place to bring out kids and how great it will be to have this as an option for an activity in the desolate, dark winter months.

Thank God for the Dean Aquatic Center!

Lord, thank you for giving us access to the pool at Albion College and for all of the fun we've had there.  I am so grateful for time with the girls tonight and for the joy they both expressed during our trip to the pool.  Thank you for giving us this place as an option for a family activity in the winter too.  In your name I pray, Amen.
